Your own mine

Is there anything more exciting that visiting a secret uranium mine? Probably there is, but a visit in Sztolnie Kowary is still high on the list. 1,200 metres of history, an hour of underground living and a thrill – this is what the Liczyrzepa mine attracts with – and never fails.

Characteristics, origin, benefits, legal protection

The Liczyrzepa Mine is the Underground Tourist and Education Trail closely connected with the secret story of U-238 extraction. It is one of more than twenty adits of the R-1 Industrial Plant that dealt with finding and extracting uranium that was later sent to the Soviet Union. It tells the story of mining in Kowary which was connected with extracting minerals, precious stones, iron, silver and uranium for 800 years.

You can take this journey in time with our experienced guides from the underground world of history, legends and secrets.

The trail is completely safe as far as radioactive radiation is concerned as it is regularly monitored by the Occupational Health Care Institute in Łódź.

From the crossroads follow the signs towards Kowary.

Opening times

The Underground Tourist Trail is open every day:

  • summer season (July-August): 09:00-19:00 (last entry at 18:00)
  • autumn season (September): 09:00-18:00 (last entry at 17:00)
  • winter season (October-March): 09:00-17:00 (last entry at 16:00)
  • spring season (April-June): 09:00-18:00 (last entry at 17:00)
  • Individual visitors: at the top of every hour.

Attention!

  • On Easter Sunday, 1 November, 25 December and 1 January the trail is closed.
  • The trail is 1,200 m long.
  • The visit takes about 1 hour.
  • Temperature inside: about +8°C.
  • In the summer season warm clothes are recommended.
  • Humidity: about 98 %.
  • The trail is equipped with electric lights. The mine is handicapped-accessible.
